4.6 Cylinder head

I am removing the cylinder head on my 4.6 (97 f-150 windsor) to repair a stripped spark plug hole (#4) My Haynes book says I need the camshaft locking tool so my timing does not get messed up when I put the head back on. Went to Ford today to get the tool and they said that I do not need it and it's only needed for the variable timing engines. Is this true or do I need the tool?
