truck starts but turns off

i've got a 1990 f250 5.8L. you can start it, but when the key turns to the run position it shuts off.
Changed the ignition switch and lock cylinder, did not fix problem.
Changed steering column, but i think i got a bad one from the wrecker.

is it stalling or do you mean you lose all power?

My '80 did a similar thing. Replaced the ignition switch at the bottom of steering column. Good now. It's a bit of a pita job. Have to unbolt column from underneath dash and remove bracket to get at switch. 20 bucks for part. Here is what I'm talking about: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ignit...item3ef73cf834. Good luck.

Does everything power up before starting? Key in run position?

when i put the key in run position there is no power. when i turn the key to the start position, about half way the truck powers up and then the truck will start. If i hold the key the truck will run, but soon as i let go the truck loses power.

do you have a Hayne's manual for the truck? You've got a wiring issue. Welcome to owning a pre97 lol

well problem solved. Yes it was a wiring problem. a little bit of hillbilly wiring when the owners before me installed a alarm system. well a connector came lose from a relay that i didn't notice and when the steering column was lowered more things came unconnected making it harder to solve. i guess the simplest problem can be the most troubling.

Thanks for all the help i appreciate it!
