If you want to check the fuel system, probably an easier way is to connect a fuel pressure gauge to the schrader valve on the fuel rail under the hood. This would tell you:
1) that the pump is producing sufficient pressure to operate with the injectors
2) that you're getting fuel through to at least the fuel rail.
Another thing to check is the gas cap. It should be relieving the vacuum in the tank. In other words, you shouldn't get a "pop" when you take it off.
In the meantime, I'd pour some gas line antifreeze into the tank. Do you keep the tank over half-full in the winter?
