Heated Seat Cushion

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else out there has a medical condition known as "frozen @ss". There's going to be a lot of it going around in the next few months, I hear.

I was just at Canadian Tire and I happened to notice they have some heated seat cushions on sale. I remember how cozy heated seats in other people's fancier trucks could be at -40, so on a whim, I picked upht this one for $22.49 (regular price $34.99). It's on sale to the end of Thursday.

I put it on top of my seat in the parking lot and tried it out. It gets warm pretty fast. I'd say like in about 2-3 minutes or so. It has a control on the cord that plugs into your 12V lighter socket with a switch and 2 LEDS for the 2 different heat settings.

Overall, it seems to be pretty well-made, and for the price, you can't go wrong. It's good that it has the two different heat settings, because after about 10-15 minutes I found the "high" setting getting a little too warm. Once you get the initial chill out of your butt and back, the low setting is just right. Oh, and it warms your back, too, which is really good.

I think I'm going to put it on underneath my seatcover to help keep it from sliding around, and it will look better. Maybe I'll eventually wire it in permanently with a switch on the console, or something. A relay wired to the ignition would be good, too, since this thing doesn't have a timer on it and I think it would run down your battery pretty quick if you forgot to switch it off or unplug it.

This would also make a decent Christmas present for someone. Did I mention I could use another one for the passenger seat?:icon_biggrin:

At that price, I should buy one, tear it apart and see if the element could be put under my factory cover. OEM elements are like $50+ for each base/back. plus the switch etc.

was thinking of doing the same thing.
cutting a little bit of foam out and laying it in place. then putting the seat cover back on/ over
I used one of the cheapest ct heated seat pads in my old truck for years and it worked great. I'm hoping to install element in the stock seats in my new truck. I'll avoid the sale for now to motivate myself to get going on an install :)

That's a great idea.

As it happens, I had to cut a slit in the middle to pass the flap from my seat cover through the back. I felt around for any wires before I cut.

This gave me a chance to see what's inside. It looks like there are two square-ish pads, maybe 10"x10", for the seat and the back. There is a wire running from the seat pad to the back pad. The heating elements themselves seem like they are nice and flat, and rather flexible. The pads are also fairly thin.

I suspect the entire pad material is the actual heater, rather than a network of heater wires. So this would be ideal for installing directly into the seat cushions.

For now, I'll just leave it under my seat cover becuause I've got 897 other projects to finish first. It doesn't look too lumpy, and the straps do a good job of keeping it from shifting around.

I never thought having a heated seat would be so awesome!
D:)
That sounds great. The factory ones are like a white felt pad with rows of fine wires. I think this would have to be somewhat similar. I wish I had made it in on time to get one on sale.

Ya, my last 3 SuperDuties were Lariats with leather guts, 2 of them had heated heats and I loved it. This one is an XLT with cloth which is not nearly as bad in the cold without heat as leather is but heat still rocks if I can add it.
Hmm, I just realized my remote starter has some unused relay outputs. My 2-way remote has a trunk unlatch button which, obviously, isn't used for anything. Maybe I'll connect a relay to the output to turn on the seat heater by remote start, so the seat will be all nice and cozy when I get in.

I'll have to add that to my list of projects.

I did that on my '03, it worked beautiful (expect the damn controller from Ford was on a timer so it would only run 10 min)

Great minds think alike.
In the wifes freestyle. the heater won't activate unless your sitting on it.

I've started up her car couple times last winter, turned on the seats then proceeded to clean off the snow. by the time we get back and in the seats are on.. but not warm. they start warming up when you sit on them.

Not sure if the aftermarket one warms up without sitting on it

Sounds like a little rewiring is in order. I tend to have to do a lot of that...

key dinger, seatbelt minder, factory audio, guages at actually read something, etc etc.

And it's getting worse, I was driving a new Taurus this week, The freakin radio actually muted until I did up my seat belt! WTF?? I'd fix that in a hurry if it was mine!

Now a heated seat that needs you in it??

It's getting out of control, if we keep "safe guarding" people like this, the gene pool is going to get pretty messed up :)
old thread.... but just throwing an option out there to people thinking about this topic

Rock Auto sells the Dorman kits with wiring and switch for $69 per seat.

yup found the site quickly, but their formatting and such takes some getting use to
I've run the cheap Cdn Tire ones for 2 years in my previous truck and one in the wife's car. Bought 5 of them one year at Christmas when they were on for $10 and gave them out as gifts like someone suggested earlier.
