Need Help Screw 4.6 or 5.4

I would like to say thanks to FX4Matt for referring me to this website. I'm looking forward to chip in and help this site grow.
I currently drive an 06 Ranger FX4 Level II. It gets a great 14.5 MPG on mixed driving. My lease is up next spring and I'm looking to get a F-150 since i'm done school now and can afford a little higher payment. I got my eyes set on the supercrew FX2. I know its not a 4X4 but i think I don't really need it as long as I get limited slip and traction control. Now my question is should I get the 4.6L or 5.4? All i tow is a 650lb quad and usually in the back of the bed. Whats the real world MPG ratings for a 5.4 vs 4.6L? As long as I can milk out about 16.5, I will be happy.. I look forward to the responses. Sc

My parents have 05 and 06 5.4 Supercrew's. I think 16.5 mixed driving with a 5.4 is a little high. The 4.6 might have better mileage but a supercrew is a big truck and a 4.6 has to work harder to move it around. I'd go with the 5.4
Hey

Welcome to FordTough.ca!

I've got '05 5.4 Supercrew and I do alot of highway driving..
I averaged 18MPG.. that is about 400-450highway.. 100 or so intown..

I just put some 33's on it and a leveling kit and it being winter have had it idling in the drive way warming up couple days.. so it isn't looking as good.. gunna see how this tanks works out though..
5.4............
5.4............
Agree
you will not notice huge difference in milage with smaller engine
canadianedge you have a PM
BTW

Go 5.4L I know some people who went 4.6L and regret it because fuel economy is about the same but it just isn't enough oomph for that big of a truck.
A 5.4 is a must have
i have the 4.6 and it is slow but its a truck not a race car lol ,i have heard of more problems with the 5.4 like the spark plugs etc
go with the 5.4 I've had both and they get pretty much the same milage but the 5.4 has more power off the line and highway driving is better also, I got better fuel milage with the 5.4 then the 4.6.
well it came out to
495kms on 97L's of fuel..

I used to get roughly 550.

but i really like the sound of the exhaust now so it's soo hard not to step on it.. lol
14-15 in the city and 17-18 highway with my 5.4l.

Agree. the more mods you do, the harder you drive:icon_twisted:,
With AWD I know that I can't even spin rear tires, So I'm not doing anything to the engine:icon_lol: just visual for me

You won't regret the 5.4 but may regret the 4.6.
i think i might wait for an 09, but my gf keeps on telling me to buy an mkz..

In that case..
Get a diesel.. within no time will they have a computer add-on to boost :icon_twisted: the power output!! When needed of course :icon_twisted: !!

And you get better fuel mileage..

I just hope ford brings out what Chev and Dodge already have.. where it shuts down half the engine when your on the high-way... if your doin alot of high-way driving.. you can more then double your fuel mileage..
My wifes aunt & uncle just bought an '07/'08 GMC Sierra truck.. The new design with the 327 (5.3L) and he averages 36MPG on the tank.. city and highway.. :icon_sad:
thanks for the help, i might as well wait for the 09, it looks to be a real nice truck..
My 06 150 with 5.4 is wicked full tank of gas and doing 105 km on highway,I get 920- 998km on a tank i still can't believe it the diesel 760 - 820km on full tank
5.4 all the way!! lol
