so which diesel is the best option ?


ive herd the early 7.3's 1999 to 2000 are a stay away engine....bad fuel econo and performance

the 2001 to 2002 7.3's were a good stout engine....

the 2003 to 2004 6.0's were bad for headgaskets

the 2005 to 2007 6.0's were a good engine but still a head gasket issue if modded

6.4's bad fuel economy....






looking for a diesel to replace the explorer (whole truck not a motor swap lol)

theres a ton of options

plans for the truck are mild towing, klm driving and everyday use mods would be exhaust and programer other perf stuff

Not sure where you heard that 1999 - 2000 where bad 7.3's. Yes they made improvements through till 2002, but those are still really good motors especially because they used forged rods in those years. In and around 2001, they switched to PMR's and that severely limited how much you could mod them. The PMR 7.3's are limited to 400hp whereas the 99-00 you could mod to beyond 500hp safely. If you want a good stout towing motor, stick with the 7.3. If you want to go fast, go with the 6.0 but stay with 06-07 MY's.

I enjoyed my 99 7.3 alot, gonna miss that truck. Good mileage and lots of towing power.

depends what you plans are, but the 7.3 is the most reliable, personally if I could choose out of any truck right now i'd get a new 6.4, dpf delete, tuner and a few other upgrades and your pushing close to 600 hp without any major upgrades

Nothing wrong with the 99-00. The 99 SD lauched early in Jan for an 18 month modekll year and under went some some changes in (I believe the following Nov). These trucks were referred to as 99.5 and the changes carried through as the changes for the 2000 model year. The 2 biggest mechanical changes were larger brake rotors on the later 99.5 & the turbo was "improved". The earlier turbo's wined alot louder and some people loved the sound and swear by them but I can't remember what the specific "improvements" were from changing it. It was probably the size of the vanes or # possibly to boost power, I can't remember. The easiest way to spot an early 99 is they were the only 99+ Super Duties with the engine badges on the fenders instead of the doors.

Early 99's had a 15 degree HPOP and Smaller turbo, the "late" 99's (99.5) went up to a 17 degree HPOP, And a few turbo changes, basically a 99.5 turbo with a wicket wheel is essentially the same as a early 99 turbo but there are a few other changes to the uppies, spider etc as well

It's crazy what they can do with a 6.4 now. Simple mods and you are in the 13's. Heaven forbid you need warranty work though :sign0082:

lol thanks for the input, theres nothing wrong with the early 7.3's just the turbo issue and less power...

ive herd that the new 6.4's can be rockets though moded or not are still a pig on fuel.... i had one for a day of test driving and 12mpg isnt good mpg and thats not on the fuel alot or even towing.


the truck would be used to tow a car trailer/bunch of quads once and a while mostly a daily driver to just toss out the back smoke and sound mean

i wouldn't hesitate to buy another 6.0. As long as you get one with warranty and are prepared to do head studs and the egr delete, it's a great engine.

however, i'd definitely go for a 6.4 if i could afford one!

Stock they may have less power, but don't forget that the early 7.3's have forged rods. You can make way more power with the earlier ones with programming, injectors, et. al.
